CC the Manatee and the Merpeople wmv
To help protect manatees and their habitats, please visit http://www.savethemanatee.org/donations. Rescued as an orphan in the Caloosahatchee River near Ft. Myers, Florida on July 1st, 2006, CC was raised and cared for in captivity. He was released and recaptured several times in Crystal River, Florida because he wasn't adapting well in the wild. CC became ill with cold stress and was again rescued for the last time on March 13th, 2010. After recuperating, he was again released in Crystal River with his monitoring buoy and was seen regularly throughout the year of 2012. During this time, while I was filming a performance by two 'Merpeople' in Three Sisters Springs, I captured the delightful and unplanned performance of CC demonstrating in his own way, a manatee's gentleness and joy of life. Later, CC's many rescues and rehabilitations were considered successful and his monitoring gear was removed. Somehow, he made his way to the other coast of Florida where the boats were probably faster and more numerous than in Crystal River. Sadly, CC's remains were recovered near Ft. Lauderdale on November 27th, 2013. R.I.P. CC. We miss you. Thanks to Helen Spivey, the original "Manatee Lady", for inspiring me to make this tribute to the memory of CC.
