Fred Yates Artist

A film shot by Cathy Sayers about Fred Yates the painter and also a friend. Fred starts a painting and whilst taking the viewer through his philosophy about life and art, completes the canvas. Fred, sometimes referred to as the "Happy Lowry" from his Manchester roots, is talking at his final home in La Motte Chalenson in France. He was due to return to Frome in Somerset but died beforehand. HIs life was full of variety. After serving in the second world war, the video describes his decision to take up art, his move to Cornwall, and the somewhat difficult times he had settling anywhere for long. The film is the only insight of its kind showing the artist at work. Shot by film maker Cathy Sayers, it was commissioned by The John Martin Gallery, London for an exhibition called "Different Ways of Seeing" at the Penlee Gallery, Penzance, Cornwall. Interviewees include Nancy Hall, a big collector of Fred's work and also a friend. It also features Emily Ash, now Emily Nixon, who came across Fred in her then role as Curator of the Newlyn Gallery, Cornwall.
