Sacred America | Jeremiah "Jay" Julius | TEDxOrcasIsland

Jay is an Officer (Secretary) of the governing body of the Lummi Nation, and is married and the proud father of three children. He reflects on fundamental elements in the culture and heritage of his people to recognize sacred practices and their place in our lives today.

He was instrumental in moving LIBC to a firm “No” position regarding the proposed coal terminal at Cherry Point (Xwe’chi’eXen). He was later appointed leader of Xwe’chi’eXen Operational Team that is responsible for protecting Xwe’chi’eXen and the surrounding waters. As a fisherman and crabber, he understands the importance of fishing for the way of life and heritage of the Lummi people. As a leader who thinks local and global, he played a leadership role in developing the Lummi Nation’s recent climate change Resolution, one of the first of its kind in Indian Country.

Jeremiah “Jay” Julius (Sle-lh’x elten) is an avid reader and student of the history and culture of his people, The Lummi Nation. He is a man of great faith and hope who understands the importance to his family and all his relations of strengthening families and preserving family values. He believes it is critical that we learn from and respect the past, including protecting treaty rights, sacred sites, the environment and the Lummi way of life.
