Native Pottery Demonstration with Dominque and Maxine Toya (Jemez Pueblo)
Dominique Toya is a fifth generation potter from Jemez Pueblo. She started making pieces since she was 5 years old, and has since won numerous awards at art shows, including Best of Division for a collaboration with Nancy Youngblood at the Santa Fe Indian Market, Best of Show at Eiteljorg Indian Market in Indianapolis for a collaboration with Jody Naranjo, Best of Classification at the Heard Indian Market in Phoenix, and Best of Classification at the Santa Fe Indian Market. Her pottery is published in many books and magazines. Her role models and teachers include her grandmother, the late Marie G. Romero, her mother, Maxine Toya, and Nancy Youngblood. Dominique has looked up to these women for inspiration for many years, and she lives by what her grandmother taught her at a very early age, quality over quantity.
Maxine Toya started making pottery in her twenties. Her clay sculptures are inspirations of her mother, the late Marie G. Romero, and the sculptor, the late Allen Houser. She loves creating figures that are free flowing and that have a simplicity to them. She has recently started collaborating with her daughter, Dominique Toya, where she utilizes her painting skills. Maxine has won numerous awards for her pottery, including the collaborations with her daughter.
