How to save money on groceries easy
How to save money on groceries easy: without coupons! I am a normal frugal shopper who used to spend way too much on groceries because I didn’t know how much money I was spending at expensive NYC grocery stores. Especially when you live in an area that’s already got price markups you need to use these tips and hacks to save money on food shopping, though you can use them anywhere. Over time and word of mouth and honestly getting to know my local cheap, rather affordable, grocery options helped me learn these tips and so I hope they help you save up to half of your bill on your next grocery trip!
1. My #1 hack is to read price tags unit or weight prices to find the best deals.
2. Before you leave your home, check what you have in your pantry or fridge so you don’t overbuy.
3. Don’t go grocery shopping hungry. I know, you’ve heard it before but it’s true, I’ve done this by accident and I always end up with the more exotic expensive cheeses. (Please tell me it is not just me?)
4. Go with a shopping list and stick to it!
5. Divide your budget not by month but by week!
6. Limit shopping trips to one trip per week.
7. Be open to trying new stores slightly out of the way that have better prices. It cannot hurt to try to shop around!
8. Shop the perimeter of the store first, where they put all the essentials.
9. For the freshest and cheapest products reach in the back or look away from eye level for cheaper deals and fresher items.
10. Double check eggs are not cracked and fruit is not bruised so you get the freshest food that will last longer with the best value for your dollar.
11. Double check the expiration dates. If you see a “sell by” date that often assumes the buyer will eat the item a few days after buying it.
12. Avoid shopping produce out of season when it’s not as good and more expensive.
13. Avoid convenient or precut fruits and veggies.
14. When possible buy in bulk, still keeping an eye on price by weight or unit to make sure you’re getting the cheapest option.
15. Plan when you go grocery shopping strategically.
16. Skip the name brands.
17. Read deal fine print.
18. Look for meat markdowns.
19. Or buy less meat.
20. Strategize your spices.
21. Check the clearance section.
22. Avoid bottled water.
23. Bring reusable grocery bags to reduce waste and depending on where to also avoid paying for each grocery bag which can add up.
24. Don’t use a huge shopping cart.
25. Watch the register! Do this for two reasons: to see if there are any errors and to check you are staying within your budget.
