Alkimos Shipwreck up close (Shorehaven)

Getting up close to the wreck of the ship SS Alkimos, which was a Greek-owned merchant ship that wrecked on the coast north of Perth, Western Australia in 1963.

A nearby locality was later named after the vessel. The wreck is a popular diving venue.

In 1963, after going in for repairs in Fremantle, the Alkimos was being towed to Hong Kong when gale force winds drove it to shore.

Back in the sixties apparently the ship was still above water and you use to be able to see the deck and people use to report seeing an old sailor in an oilskin coat pacing the decks. One of many weird stories about the ship wreck.

Today, all that is left of the Alkimos is the triple expansion steam engine and a section of the bow and stern.
