Paragliding stall twist reserve
Description and Conclusions:
This was a full stall practice with my DHV1/2 wing (Macpara Eden 4). I performed 4 prior exercises with a DHV1 wing a day ago and that wing had behaved just like as described (aggressively jump back and forth). I waited patiently for at least 10 seconds in the stall state and I successfully recovered the stall only by releasing the brakes slowly.
The difference of a DHV1/2 (EN-B) wing is that the wing does not behave similarly to DHV1 at all. A DHV1/2 wing gets a crescent shape as seen at 0:23, and it turns out that it starts flying backwards. As you would know, weight shift makes the wing turn in a forward flight. In a backwards flight, any weight shift makes that turn much more violent. I didn't know that at that time, so I didn't care about my weight distribution during the full stall. The wing turned rapidly, but because of my inertia, the wing couldn't make me turn, thus resulting in a twist. I had more than enough altitude, so I waited a bit for the wing to recover itself (which is also wrong), and yes it recovered itself by chance but it rapidly turned the other side. My instructor didn't realize that I had a twist and instructed me to release the brakes. I executed his instruction and released the breaks during the twist and it just locked in that state. I tried to fix the twist, but I couldn't make it.
My conclusion is that if you see the wing in that crescent shape, you must realize that you started flying backwards, and your wing is much more sensitive to the weight shifts. If you have a twist and IF YOU ALSO HAVE ENOUGH ALTITUDE, don't release your brakes. Fix the twist by shifting your weight to the correct side (never forget, your wing is flying backwards) and then recover from the full stall by releasing your brakes slowly. (e.g. release your brakes within 3 seconds) Moreover, you shouldn't follow the instructions blindly.
