Karen is still remembered as one of the greatest voices of all time, but all the success in the world wasn’t enough to stave off dark thoughts. She felt unloved by her family, never achieved her dream of having children, and struggled with her weight almost her entire life.

Karen was never obese but was also never satisfied with her current weight. As a woman, her desire to mirror models like Twiggy was understandable. The problem was that the methods she used to achieve this goal became pathological.

Karen began to refuse almost all food after first going on tour with The Carpenters. She abused medications like laxatives and thyroid pills in an attempt to lose weight as fast as possible. She also engaged in exhausting cycles of binging and purging.

Anorexia nervosa, a condition that was yet to be diagnosed when Karen was alive, sent her to the hospital numerous times. Doctors did everything they could to keep her alive, but their efforts weakened her heart.

Fans were shocked by her shrinking body and worried she may have developed some form of cancer. Family members didn’t understand why she wouldn’t eat and were unable to provide the right resources for her to overcome her condition.

Karen never told the truth about her internal struggles to anyone but her therapist. She seemed to have healed mentally and physically in the last few months before her death, but the true impact of her condition eventually became too obvious to ignore.
