The Sound of Silence is a song by Simon & Garfunkel, featuring acoustic guitar and overdubbed vocals. It is a folksy and whimsical sad song that contains moments of optimism. Since its release it has become the subject of a meme based on the lyric "Hello darkness my old friend" which is often accompanied with various pictures of sad people or an unfortunate subject who has just experienced misfortune.
