Sanding sticks for Jewelry & Metalsmithing & more

Sanding sticks are a very effective way to sand and finish flat surfaces. The idea is that you use them and tear away the old sandpaper as needed to expose fresh grit. They can be made in any grit to fit your workflow. These sticks are optimized for half-sheets of standard 9"x11" sandpaper. I find that using a whole sheet of sandpaper gets too puffy and round and the flatness from the stick is negated. I think half-sheets are the best compromise for usage, cost, and effectiveness. I prefer maple because it is commonly available from big box stores but I would suggest any fine-grained (smooth) hardwood. Big box stores also have smaller thinner strips of hardwood that will work fine but I find this size is best for the half-sheets. A single piece of 24" long x 6" wide x 3/4" board can make a lifetime of sanding sticks! ask your local woodworker to cut them into strips, I find craftspeople are very sympathetic to other craftspeople!
