How to use a Foreign Issued Card to Withdraw Money from a Japanese Post Office ATM | Gaijin Survival
Learn how to withdraw money while in Japan using an overseas issued credit or debit card!
Today we show you how to use a card to withdraw Japanese money from an ATM. We also give you 5 very important points to remember while using a Japanese ATM.
While Japan is making great strides towards using debit and credit cards, it is still largely a cash-based society. While you will probably be able to use cards in larger cities, many of the smaller cities and towns will not accept either credit or debit cards.
Japan has 20,000+ Post Offices with ATMs that will allows you to withdraw money using a foreign-issued card.
Start by hitting the English guide on the ATM screen. In the upper right-hand corner is a "withdrawal" button. Insert your credit or debit card, and hit the "card issued overseas" button. Select whether the card is a debit or credit card, and enter your pin number. Punch the green confirm button (確認). Enter the amount you would like to withdraw. You can then withdraw your Japanese cash from the cash dispenser.
There are 5 important points that I feel worth of mention for those that plan on using a credit or debit card to withdraw money from an ATM while in Japan.
#1 - Make sure to let your bank know that you are heading overseas.
#2 - Most ATMs in Japan have business hours
#3 - Make sure to bring a card that is accepted by the ATM (Visa or Mastercard, etc.)
#4 - There is a limit to how much you can withdraw in a single transaction. It is 50,000 yen, roughly $500.
#5 - There are ATM Fees
If you need to find a post office ATM while you are in Japan, simply use a map app to find your nearest post office.
And for those who want to be able to withdraw money using the regular Japanese settings as opposed to the "English Guide," we show you how to navigate the kanji so that you can withdraw your money in Japanese!
