“LAST DAY, LAST HOUR”...HNH CO Public Land Elk Hunt 2019
Bowhunting, Brotherhood and Bugling Bulls in September. This Colorado Elk Hunting video was shot the last week of season, September 20-29. The first few days we spent elk hunting in the backcountry, on mountain bikes. The area we were accessing had a washed out road that made the idea of biking seem bearable, but it wasn't. Six miles of pushing bikes uphill with heavy packs on was a horrible idea. Took a lot out of us. That said the action in this area was moderate with bulls bugling only in the morning. We had one close call in three days and no pressure. We met a couple of really cool hunters in that area who we shared a meadow with for a couple nights. These guys were true hardcores, I think they had been in there 10 days when we got there and had about 120 miles of OnX tracks.
The last days we set up our customary comfy camp. Outfitter tent, cots, cook tent, and big sleeping bags made the difference for us. We hunted off a forest road system hard for the next five days. The cows were in heat and the bulls were bugling off the hook. We had multiple call ins. I was the one who shot and missed that bull. It was a horrible shot that I immediately regretted. I don't mind a hard quartering away angle on a bull as long as I can see the back rib and I could. That said, I should never have stayed at full draw that long, I was impatient, I forced the shot, the wind was howling and I really got caught up in the moment. Clean miss, low left. No excuses, I will do better next time.
Our last morning we spotted two bulls over a mile away above tree line and Jeff cow called loud through a bugle tube. The bigger bull turned and started heading down the hill our way. It took him over two hours to get to the creek bottom below us where he started to wallow. We could tell because we could hear him at the bottom bugling in the same place over and over. Jeff kept him bugling as I slipped in and one soft cow call directed back toward where Jeff was and he was coming. The bull came through an opening quartering away uphill at 22 yards. I thought at first the arrow was back a little far but it entered just behind the last rib and came out the opposite armpit. It was a quick kill.
This was the most amazing High Noon Hunt to date. We are truly grateful to our families for supporting us. We love you. We also want to say thanks to everyone we met along the way. So many people helped us out. The camaraderie that we experienced this year was incredible. Elk Hunting in the wilderness is a blessing. Cant wait to do it again.
Thanks For Watching
