U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-VA Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH)
This collaborative program between HUD and VA combines HUD housing vouchers with VA supportive services to help Veterans who are homeless and their families find and sustain permanent housing. As of December 20, 2020, HUD has allocated more than 105,000 vouchers to help house Veterans across the country.

New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, San Jose, Austin, Fort Worth and Jacksonville.

How It Works
Through public housing authorities, HUD provides rental assistance vouchers for privately owned housing to Veterans who are experiencing homelessness. VA case managers may connect these Veterans with support services such as health care, mental health treatment, and substance use counseling to help them in their recovery process and with their ability to maintain housing in the community. Among VA homeless continuum of care programs, HUD-VASH enrolls the largest number and largest percentage of Veterans who have experienced long-term or repeated homelessness.

Can the VA help you get an apartment?
Rental assistance vouchers are available for those veterans who are eligible for VA healthcare services and are at risk of homelessness. The veteran is then able to choose housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments, where the landlord agrees to rent under the program.

Disabled Veteran Housing Assistance
Veterans with certain service-connected or aging-related disabilities can get housing help. You may qualify for special housing grants from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

You may be eligible for a Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant. You do not need to have a service-connected disability to qualify. This grant provides medically necessary improvements and structural changes to your primary home.

What does HUD-Vash pay for?
Through the HUD- VASH program, eligible homeless veterans receive housing assistance from local Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) to rent privately-owned housing while receiving case management and clinical and supportive services from the VA.
