Blind Horse and Her Seeing Eye Buddy Saved From Euthanasia

Welcome home, Apollo and Sapphira!

Recently, we were made aware of a situation involving two aged horses at a farm near our sanctuary. The owner of the farm was diagnosed with terminal cancer, and had to move to another home. One of the realtors involved reached out to us to help! The horses, now named Apollo and Sapphira, are in their late twenties and have been together almost their entire lives. Sapphira is completely blind (with stunning icy blue eyes!), and Apollo is her best friend and guide. They are extremely bonded, and Sapphira cannot be without Apollo. The owner reached out to a few horse rescues before we were contacted, but they were all full. So she made the hard decision to euthanize both horses together. The realtors involved pleaded with her, begging for a little bit of time so that they could try to find placement, but her mind was pretty made up. At first, we said we couldn’t help, because we just don’t have the space. However, we were moved by the emotions of everyone involved, and we were told the horses are just as sweet as can be. We knew they deserved to live out their last couple of years together in a safe place, and after speaking with our team, we decided that we could help them — as long as we could raise enough money to buy them a shelter and cover their immediate medical care. They are very underweight, they need immediate hoof care, Sapphira needs eye care, and Apollo has arthritis and lameness issues that urgently need attention. Raising these funds was no small feat, but our amazing community pulled together and raised the funds we needed in ONE night! Thanks to all of you who donated or shared, they are now safe, sound, and most importantly...together 💙
