Franz Schubert: Fantasy in C major, Op. 15 (D. 760), 'Wanderer Fantasy' | Lang Lang (piano)

Lang Lang in concert with Franz Schubert's Wanderer Fantasy (Fantasie in C major, Op. 15 (D. 760)) in New York's Carnegie Hall, 2003.

Schubert composed the Wanderer Fantasy in November of 1822, and it was so technically demanding that Schubert himself said of it "the devil may play it," – implying that he himself could not.

'Wanderer Fantasy' was the popular title given to the piece from Schubert's 1816 lied 'Der Wanderer'. The melody of the lied is developed as the central theme of the piano fantasy. The Wanderer Fantasy is structured as four movements, which flow one into the other. Within the second movement, the wanderer theme is played in its pure form, and from there is explored as numerous variations. As such, the Wanderer Fantasy serves as an example par excellence for how a simple theme can carry a complex work – in which new dimensions of the source material are always being carried through to fruition.

Schubert's Fantasie in C major, Op. 15 has a place in the standard repertoire of every virtuoso pianist. What makes this performance of it especially intoxication, however, is Lang Lang's powerful and spirited playing, and his expressive personality.

(00:00) Allegro con fuoco ma non troppo
