British Sign Language - My BSL Learning Journey: Reflections on Week 4

Thank you for viewing my BSL learning reflections and journey as I learn Level 2 BSL.

Apologies for errors, I am still learning and accept that my memory or understanding of the sign may be inaccurate.

I was considering the transcribing / subtitling - whether it should be "English subtitles" so that I am putting it into English Grammatical Structures, or whether I am transcribing the British Sign Language with its grammatical structure. I have decided I will transcribe using BSL subtitles, which I hope will be useful for those learning.

However, I am doing these videos in order to practice what I am learning, sharing with you the wonderful language, and hope to inspire others to learn the language so that our communities can be more inclusive and expressive.

Communication skills are really useful in all walks of life, and sometimes our abilities to communicate can fall short, but I want to learn BSL in order to expand my knowledge, build upon my understanding of the Deaf community and culture and be more inclusive.

And lastly BSL is a great skill to pass on to family and friends, who may not be deaf, but hard of hearing or as a means to communicate more efficiently in a noisy or distance environment... you can communicate through a crowded room...a noisy setting or through windows where you can't easily hear each other. How incredibly useful is that!

Our sessions have elements of hearing/seeing other people's weekend news, looking at other videos to learn receptive skills, as well as this first session was trying to "translate" an article into a sign language presentation.

I will try to sign the new words that I have been learning, and where the session is particularly modular, such as one of the four themes of the programme, I will mention this.

We watched "The Concert" from Signature and these were some of the new words I learnt.
