PRO DESIGN TIP: "Cyberpunk 2077" (CD Projekt Red, 2020)

COMMON GAME DESIGN TECHNIQUE EXAMPLE: "Standalone" Tutorials
CD Projekt Red. (2020). Cyberpunk 2077 [Video game]. Warsaw, Poland: CD Projekt.
An example of a "standalone" or "explicit" tutorial that the player has the option of engaging with, in this case giving clear examples of the "readability" of the camera viewcone to aid player strategies.
(The following text refers to the “Gatekeeper” tutorial and its necessary evolution)
While an integral element of classic game design, “Gatekeeper” tutorials that are
imposed on the player and are necessary for accessing the main game are generally
discouraged in modern games due to the expected increase in player agency within these titles. Modern players expect to access the game they paid for as soon as they want, and those who are “told” to complete tutorials to reach the main game may instead decide to “tell” the Game (and its designer) where to go. Not so in ye olden times of Game Design. An example of an “old school” tutorial is apparent in the PC/PS1 title Driver 2 (Reflections Interactive, 2000).
In control of a 70s muscle car, the player is enclosed within an underground car park and tasked with a series of increasingly difficult manoeuvres (burnout, slalom, 180, lap, etc.) within a time limit. From a game designer’s perspective, this “lock‑in” is a fantastic way to deter‑
mine the player’s available skills when they leave that garage, enabling level design
from that point based around the skills you know the player has learned. From a player’s
perspective, however, perhaps not so great. If you don’t complete this incredibly frus‑
trating sequence, you don’t get to play the rest of the game that you’ve just paid for.
