ID-2390/G AN/GRC 215 I/O terminal AN/TRC-179 shelter
This is the data terminal ID-2390/G for the AN/GRC-215 radio installation used in the cold-war military Regency Net (called Flaming Arrow Net in war time). It is based on the 8088 processor. Each CPU and I/O board is in there twice, as a redundancy measure in case a board would fail. This terminal was used to set-up the HF SSB AN/GRC-215 system, and as an I/O terminal to exchange data to other nodes in the net. All data was transmitted between nodes through the air waves using single-sideband radios (see my other videos for the actual radios that were used for that purpose). The protocols used were the military STANAG wave forms.
As you can see in the video, the Regency Net and Flaming Arrow Net (FAN) are shown on the screen.
The screen is a flat plasma touch screen. Keep in mind these were the days we all used CRTs, flat-screen monitors were unheard of then, let alone with touch capability. The reason a flat screen was used here is because a CRT cannot handle the shock and vibrations apparent in a military radio shelter or jeep. So this must have been VERY expensive technology then.
