The historical example of Bletchley Park in 1938 shows us the inclusive power of collaboration to solve the worlds greatest challenges. Now, more than ever we must create more opportunities for insights and breakthroughs to emerge. Nandini Ranganathan explains how cryptography is just a lens through which to see the world as a magical, addictive, unending source of puzzles. Too often we treat problem solving as though it is about individual genius or about experts coming up with clear, brilliant solutions. On the contrary, the collaborative process is "messy" with unintended outcomes. What can happen when you put people in a room from all different backgrounds? Unravelment and results. Lets redefine what civic engagement looks like.

Nandini is the founder and Executive Director of Make+Think+Code, an institute, creative incubator, and technology lab for Portland’s creative, tech, civic, and educational communities to explore imaginative solutions to urgent problems. Nandini has a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan and is deeply passionate about expanding access to cutting-edge technology and design education.
