The Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled that candidates must have at least three years of legal practice before applying for judicial service, effectively barring fresh law graduates from sitting the examination for entry-level posts.

The judgement is expected to significantly impact those preparing for a career in the judiciary. A bench led by Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih emphasised the value of practical legal experience for aspiring judges. While delivering the verdict, the Chief Justice remarked that the appointment of recent law graduates had led to numerous complications, as highlighted by several High Courts. He noted that experience gained through courtroom practice is crucial to ensuring both competence and efficiency in the judicial process.
