A coronial inquiry into the Northern Territory's 'domestic violence epidemic' has ended | ABC News

When Northern Territory Coroner Elisabeth Armitage opened an inquiry into the NT's domestic, family, and sexual violence system in June this year, it was clear she already knew the situation was dire.
Her series of coronial inquests examined the deaths of four of the 76 Aboriginal women killed by their partners in the NT since the year 2000 — Kumanjayi Haywood, Ngeygo Ragurrk, Miss Yunupiŋu and Kumarn Rubuntja.
But what Judge Armitage uncovered throughout her six-month investigation exceeded her expectations.
"We never imagined that we would be able to delve as deeply as we have into so many different areas that are involved and affected by the domestic violence epidemic that we're living in at the moment," Judge Armitage said.
"We can't allow this level of harm to continue to occur in our communities."
The evidence at times left even her counsel assisting, Peggy Dwyer SC, "speechless".
"The underfunding [of the sector] is chronic and shocking and I think exceeds what we understood to be the extent of the problem," Dr Dwyer SC said.
"We are dealing with generations of neglect and underfunding."
