Venice's seawall along Tarpon Center Drive sustained significant damage from Hurricane Idalia and previous storms, prompting urgent action.,The city is on a mission to rebuild the seawall at its current elevation, enhancing its resilience to future storms.,Innovatively, glass flood panels almost four feet tall will be added to increase seawall height without obstructing views.,Assistant City Engineer Jon Kramer emphasizes that these panels will prevent overtopping during storm surges and rising sea levels.,The project, extending 400 feet, aims to keep vital pedestrian and emergency vehicle access open during floods.,Additionally, 100 feet of reef balls will be installed, fostering a habitat for marine life in the waters.,A one-way valve will be included in the stormwater system to prevent backflow and flooding of the intersection.,The total project cost of approximately $3 million is partly funded by a resiliency grant from the state.,With completion slated for this June, Venice hopes to showcase an effective test of the glass panel utility in flood management.
