Our Baby Girl Is Home!

✨ Amia Elaina Masters ✨
Our precious baby girl came into the world on the 18th of August after 16 hours of labour. It was an intense, completely unmedicated birth which unfortunately ended up being quite traumatic. We weren’t sure if we wanted to share details publicly but after discussing it, we felt that it was right not to hide from it, but to be open and accept that this is our birth story and maybe it can help me connect with others or help someone else with their experience. I knew I wanted to have an unmedicated birth using techniques from Hypnobirthing and was glad Will was so supportive of this, everything we learned in our classes came into play on the day of Amias birth. Unfortunately though, as I was pushing and Amias head crowned, the umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck causing her to be in major distress and heart rate to be abnormal. This resulted in an episiotomy to get her out urgently. Once her head was out there was a case of shoulder dystocia (her shoulder was stuck in my pelvic region and she wasn’t rotating) so the midwives had to force her out and dislodge her shoulder which resulted in a second degree tear. When she finally came out there was meconium present and Amia wasn’t breathing. Her lungs were only at 20% capacity so she was taken to the resuscitation station and temporarily stabilized with machines before being rushed to the Special Care Nursery to have her lungs/stomach pumped. Amia was then put on multiple rounds of antibiotics via drip for two days. While this was all occurring I was suffering from a postpartum hemorrhage (losing 1.8L of blood), 5 blood clots, and a ruptured placenta. I was shaking profusely and in and out of consciousness. This was all topped off with a number of stitches. Thank god for the amazing emergency team at Redlands Hospital who were in the room within seconds and working on me to stop the bleeding. I remember saying to Will to rush over to Amia and be with her to support her. Will followed as they took Amia out of the room and remembered what we had learned about skin to skin contact (normally done by the mother immediately after birth). Once she was stabilized he took his shirt off, cradled her chest to chest and fed her my colostrum from a syringe.
Once I was finally stabilized I was wheeled into the Special Care Nursery and reunited with my little baby girl and the most supportive and loving husband in the entire world. I can’t imagine what Will and my mum went through in those moments watching us both struggle and having to run between the both of us unsure of what the outcome would be. We we’re both monitored carefully and will forever be thankful for the technology there is today, to the doctors, emergency team, paediatrician, and the best midwives we could have ever had, Angie & Carley.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Although this was not the perfect birth we are so so grateful that we are both still here and lucky for the perfect ending... We finally have our little family... and we’re finally home. Our little girl is a fighter and we’re in awe of her strength and perfection 💫
