Winter Hummingbird Banding (2022 - 2023)

Winter hummingbird banding project in North Florida. Did you know that more than ten species of hummingbirds have been documented during the winter months in North Florida? We know this, in part, because of dedicated hummingbird banders who have been catching and releasing these remarkable birds for over 20 years. This video features hummingbird bander Fred Dietrich from Tallahassee, Florida. Fred has caught, banded and released over 2,000 hummingbirds over the last 10+ years including a female Rufous that traveled 3,500 miles from its winter home in Tallahassee to its breeding site in Chenega, Alaska!

I am so grateful to Fred for allowing me to spend a couple of days with him as he traveled around Tallahassee and North Florida, catching hummingbirds. Thank you to all the gracious hummingbird hosts who let me film and photograph in their backyards this winter.
