विष्णु पुराण – 18 Puran में विष्णु पुराणका आकार सबसे छोटा है, किन्तु महत्त्व बहुत अधिक माना गया है। विष्णु पुराण में भगवान विष्णु के चरित्र का विस्तृत वर्णन है। विष्णु पुराण के रचियता ब्यास जी के पिता पराशर जी हैं। विष्णु पुराण में वर्णन आता है कि जब पाराशर के पिता शक्ति को राक्षसों ने मार डाला तब क्रोध में आकर पाराशर मुनि ने राक्षसों के विनाश के लिये ‘‘रक्षोघ्न यज्ञ’’ प्रारम्भ किया। उसमें हजारों राक्षस गिर-गिर कर स्वाहा होने लगे। इस पर राक्षसों के पिता पुलस्त्य ऋषि और पाराशर के पितामह वशिष्ठ जी ने पाराशर को समझाया और वह यज्ञ बन्द किया। इससे पुलस्त्य ऋषि बड़े प्रसन्न हुये औरा पाराशर जी को विष्णु पुराण के रचियता होने का आर्शीवाद दिया।

इस पुराण में भूमण्डल का स्वरूप, ज्योतिष, राजवंशों का इतिहास, कृष्ण चरित्र आदि विषयों को बड़े तार्किक ढंग से प्रस्तुत किया गया है। खण्डन-मण्डन की प्रवृत्ति से यह पुराण मुक्त है। हिन्दू आध्यात्मिकता का सरल और सुबोध शैली में वर्णन किया गया है।
