Was the Mellotron the world's first sampler?

Decades before digital sampling became common, the Mellotron used strips of magnetic tape containing recordings of real instruments. Press a key, and it played back an actual flute, violin, choir, or cello—making it one of the earliest instruments to bring sampled sounds to a keyboard.
