A Human Moment

Take a walk with me. Here is about as close as I can take you in 2D. I wish I could share with you what it feels like in 3D. Because in 3D it feels like 4D.

When I was like 3 years old I heard “White Wedding” from Billy Idol and it would change my life forever. When I was 6 I think I got second hand stoned from the adults around me and heard “1983 a Merman I Shall Be” by Jimi Hendrix and decided in that moment that I would be a guitar player. I spent most of my youth in local basement bands and would close my eyes and imagine the big stage.

Hardware store. Carpenters apprentice. Sidewaller. Roofer. HVAC. Landscaper. Busboy. Dock Builder. Oyster Shucker. Karaoke Bartender.

All of these jobs I held and all of these jobs I failed at because my headphones never left my head and I couldn’t focus on anything but my dream of playing music. I am beyond lucky to be where I am, but I cannot stress the importance of determination. I didn’t come from money. I didn’t come from a big happy family. I wasn’t handed this. Me and my best friends just kept playing and playing and playing in front of ten people. Then a hundred. Then maybe 4 people. When we moved to New York our first show was in front of 4 people. We’ve been heckled by people in bars. Fired. Told to stop playing when the game comes on. All of it. For years and years and years.

But we’ve also been supported, slowly, one by one by one by people like you. By friends that believed. By producers like Joel that took a chance. And now by bands like Muse that have graciously invited us to share in their world with us.

I look back on my entire life’s journey, and although it’s had some extremely low points, I wouldn’t change a thing. All of it has led me here, and that three year old kid screaming white wedding in the back of his dads jeep is stoked.

My long winded point is that a lot of you kids and adults out there might think dreams are only dreams. They are not. They are real, and as long as you just tunnelvision yourself past the haters and keep it moving, you can actually make those dreams your reality. I know it’s hard. And I know that I will continue having to fight for my place. You can do it too. 🤷‍♂️
