The Average Salary:
According to Salary.com the average helicopter pilot salary in the United States is around $94,000 a year, not including benefits. This depends on hours, certifications and experience.
With benefits the average compensation for pilots is just over $100,000 a year.
How to maximize your salary:
In order to maximize your salary as a helicopter pilot you’ll need to get as many certifications as possible. This includes your Private, Instrument, Commercial, CFI, CFII, Mountain Ops, Long Line, Turbine and Night Vision Goggle flight training certifications.
You will also want to maximize your education. The minimum education you’ll want as a pilot is an associates degree (typically two years). Getting a bachelor’s degree would provide your with higher salary and growth options as well.
For those who already have a bachelor’s degree, a master’s degree is another great way to increase your income potential. According to salary.com your salary will increase by several thousand dollars.
The Industry: Are there jobs?
Yes. Currently the industry is facing a major upcoming shortage of pilots because of growing demand and retiring work force. Companies like Helicopter Association International (HAI) predict shortages or thousands of helicopter pilots. (To put that into perspective there are currently only about 15,000 helicopter pilots in the USA.)
Because of this, it’s highly possible wages will increase and qualifications will decrease, making it easier for new pilots to find higher paying jobs.
