Wine Review: Matthieu Barret Domaine du Coulet Cornas Brise Cailloux 2020
In today's tasting David Allen MW, Wine-Searcher's Wine Director looks at a biodynamic wine from the Cornas appellation, a wine aged in concrete eggs. The wine in Question is the 2020 vintage of Matthieu Barret's Brise Cailloux cuvee of Cornas, from Domaine du Coulet.
Matthieu Barret was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975 and studied viticulture in Beaune. Matthieu is a 7th generation vigneron, joining his grandfather working at the domaine in Cornas in 1997. Up until this stage however the family had only been farming and selling grapes.
Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu Barret’s grandfather after WWII, and over the years has supplied grapes to some of the best-known producers in the Northern Rhône, including Chapoutier and Delas Freres. While his father eschewed the agrarian lifestyle, opting instead for a career in international business, Matthieu knew from a young age that he wanted to be a winemaker. In 1998 at the age of only 23, he took over the family’s Domaine, comprising 25 acres of vines on some of the best terraced hillsides of Cornas.
From the beginning, Matthieu has employed natural, organic practices and by 2002 the domaine received biodynamic certification. Yields are kept low (23 hl/ha), giving extraordinary quality. No new oak is used and there is no racking and only minimal use of sulfur and no fining or filtration. There is only a very low sulphite addition. Matthieu describes his wines as being 100% grape, they are the embodiment of pure Syrah fruit that is true to the character of Cornas.
