HIKING MALAYSIA: Gunung Nuang (1,493m) return in 7 hours - Tough, but fun day trip

The 1,493m high Gunung Nuang is the the 86th highest peak in Malaysia. Join Richard and the crew from SG Trek as they overnight on the bus to Janda Baik in Pahang State to tackle the slippery slopes of this challenging mountain.

The Trail (from Janda Baik)
Arrive at the trailhead early as the hike can easily take up a whole day (7-10 hours).
The first two kilometres lead through farmland and along a farm road before you enter the jungle in earnest.
The trail is moderately difficult, getting pretty steep as you approach the summit. The clay soil is generally fine, but becomes treacherous when wet. There is a small technical section just before the summit.
Along the way there are several small streams to navigate so hiking boots are recommended over running shoes.

Travel Logistics
Janda Baik is around a 60-minute drive from central Kuala Lumpur (depending on traffic).
Getting to the trailhead by public transport is not easy, so if you don’t have a car, then a Grab taxi is another option. They are very cheap in Malaysia.
There are accommodation, parking and basic toilet facilities at the trailhead.
Officially you need a permit to climb Gunung Nuang from Janda Baik, although the process is complicated and lengthy so many people do not bother.
More information about permits can be found here (https://thegeotraveller.com/2016/05/31/how-to-apply-permit-to-hike-pahang-mountains/).
I made the trip with Singapore-based travel agent SG Trek (https://sgtrek.com/), who organised everything including transport, permit, guides and food (for the trek only).

Drones
There are no known restrictions on the use of drones around Gunung Nuang, although tree cover means the trailhead area and the summit are the only places where it is practical to fly. Bad weather (strong winds and mist) prevented me from filming.
