Where Russian-Americans Live in the U.S. (With Maps!)

The Russian-American is an elusive creature. Displaced from their natural habitat, Russian-American populations have migrated to a new ecosystem: the United States. As a whole, the Russian-American demographic strongly resembles the local U.S. megafauna. However, if you listen carefully, you can hear Russian-Americans vocalizing long and hard names. If you watch closely, you might spot a Russian-American consuming its preferred prey: pelmeni and borscht with sour cream.

This video will provide you with maps to help you locate Russian American habitats throughout the USA.

***MAP RELEASE NOTES***
- All data came from the American Community Survey (ACS), which is conducted by the United States Census Bureau. You can access the data at data.census.gov.
- The 2.6 million figure came from the 2017 ACS 1-year Estimate, Selected Population Profile in the United States. Update: 2018 ACS reports 2.5 million.
- All per-county numbers came from the 2015 ACS Selected Population Tables.
- All per-county numbers are ESTIMATES. The U.S. Census Bureau only conducts a comprehensive census every 10 years (where they actually count everyone in the country). 2020 is a Census year, so I will update these maps in a few months!
- I use the term "Russian-American" to refer to "people of Russian Ancestry" as defined in the ACS. In this context, being "Russian-American" has nothing to do with nationality, ethnic group, skin color, citizenship status, or whether you moved here yesterday or five generations ago.
- The opening joke should've been "MOST OF US resemble other white people." While the vast majority of Russian-Americans look like other white Europeans, there are ~186 Russian ethnic groups; they're quite diverse. If most Russian-Americans are like sour cream and most other white Americans are like mayonnaise, then some of those ethnic groups are like honey.
- The maps did not include Ukrainian-Americans, Belarusian-Americans, and people who claimed German Russian Ancestry.
