Tesla started taking bookings for its Model Y in India in July 2025. Many people expected a big response because of Tesla’s global reputation, but the reality was disappointing. The company received only about 600 orders, which is extremely low compared to its sales in other countries.

One of the biggest problems was the price. Because of high import taxes, the Model Y cost around ₹60 lakh, or about $70,000. This is far higher than what most Indian buyers are willing to spend on an electric car. Local options like Tata’s Nexon EV and Tiago EV are much cheaper, and they have already built a strong presence in the market.

Tesla also faced challenges in delivering cars. Instead of the 2,500 cars they planned to bring in, shipments have been cut down to only 350 to 500 for 2025. Deliveries will be restricted to a few cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Gurugram. On top of this, India’s charging infrastructure is still developing, and the rough road conditions make expensive premium cars harder to sell.

The weak launch in India also comes at a time when Tesla is struggling globally. In the first half of 2025, its worldwide sales dropped by 13% compared to the previous year. This has added more pressure on the company, and the poor performance in India is another setback.
