Carbide Teeth vs Knives | 4 Minutes vs 30 Seconds (Real Test)
We put carbide teeth vs knife teeth to the test on two similar size stumps using the same machine and operator.
Results:
Carbide teeth (brand new): 4 minutes 1 second
Knife setup: 30 seconds
This is the difference between chipping and cutting.
We run a hybrid setup by leaving 8 carbide teeth on the outer edges of the rotor and replacing 22 teeth in the center with knives. This keeps the head properly balanced while allowing us to take advantage of the speed and clean cutting performance of knives.
We typically don’t run full carbide setups. Most of the work is happening in the center of the head, and that’s where knives give us the best production. The outer carbides are there for protection—because nothing is more frustrating than catching a rock on the edge of the head while you’re focused on the material in front of you.
This setup lets us stay efficient while still protecting the machine when working in real-world conditions.
It’s not about what’s “better” — it’s about using the right setup for the job.
