Arjun Appadurai: Flows of Globalization
This event was recorded in September 2016 at the Vienna Humanities Festival.
Few scholars have been more influential on the conception of globalization than Arjun Appadurai. The Indian-American cultural anthropologist, a professor at New York University (and currently guest professor at Humboldt University Berlin), developed an entire critical apparatus for its analysis. At the heart of this approach, which Appadurai first presented in the early 1990s, are five overlapping and diverging flows: Ethnoscapes, Mediascapes, Technoscapes, Financescapes and Ideoscapes. At the Vienna Humanities Festival, he gives an update on his thinking on the dynamics of globalization, particularly against the backdrop of ever-increasing populism. In conversation with Shalini Randeria (IWM Rector).
