Reel Big Fish - (1992) “Spin the Globe” - Live
You may or may not know it, but this year (2021) marks the 30th anniversary of Reel Big Fish. What?!
Yes, you read it right. Way back in 1991 Aaron Barrett wanted to start a band so he got a bunch of his Los Alamitos High School friends and acquaintances together and the rest is history.
RBF played our VERY first “show” at a backyard party in December 1991.
Here’s the original lineup playing our biggest crowd pleaser/ big finish song of that time “Spin the Globe” in 1992 at a coffee house in Huntington Beach, CA. “Midnight Java” on Warner and Beach Blvd. (Long since closed)
We had just recently added our first horn player and were starting to write more and more ska songs to add to our “let’s play every genre of music there is” set list.
Anyway, thought some might like to see what the band looked and sounded like way back in those very early days. Enjoy! And happy 30th anniversary of Reel Big Fish!
Answers to questions you’ll probably ask yourself:
* Yes the band originally had a different lead singer, Aaron (18 years old in this video) did sing lead on a few songs but Ben Guzman was the main vocalist until the band broke up (temporarily) in 1993.
* We have no idea why this is in black and white, looks cool though doesn’t it?! Possibly a setting on this old VHS camera or maybe it was just broken?
* Yes there was a little editing done on this. There was a full hour + show (mostly that same wide, far away shot) with about 5 close ups in the whole entire set so, to make this more fun to watch, those got dropped in here for your viewing pleasure.
*Those girls screaming the whole time are friends of the trumpet player (it was one of, if not his very first show with us). Trying to make him feel like he was in the Beatles or something! Nice to have the support of friends!
The Players:
Aaron Barrett - Guitar
Matt Wong - Bass
Andrew Gonzales - Drums
Ben Guzman - Vocals
Lisa Smith - Guitar
Eric Vismantas - Trumpet
(SO sorry we spelled your name wrong in the video Eric! Reel big facepalm!
Funny story, when putting this upload together, totally spelled it correctly from memory but then decided to check on Wikipedia if it was right. Should have known better! )
