What if I told you one of the biggest wins in F1 history… was rigged?
Singapore 2008. Renault’s Fernando Alonso wins from 15th on the grid — a huge surprise at the time. But a year later, it all unraveled.
Turns out, Alonso’s teammate, Nelson Piquet Jr., was instructed to crash on purpose. The plan? Trigger a safety car right after Alonso had pitted — giving him a massive advantage while the rest of the field was forced to stop under yellow.
It worked perfectly. Alonso sailed into the lead, and everyone just assumed it was a lucky break. Until Piquet spilled everything in 2009… after Renault dropped him from the team.
An investigation confirmed it: Renault had staged the crash. Team boss Flavio Briatore and engineer Pat Symonds were both banned from F1. It was one of the most blatant acts of cheating the sport has ever seen.
To this day, fans debate whether this cost Felipe Massa the 2008 title. One thing’s for sure — Crashgate will always be F1’s dirtiest win.
