From sleeping on the ring with only Thai pads as pillows, to becoming a 4X Lumpinee champion and gym owner – this is Lamnammoon Sor Sumalee’s incredible story.

Lamnammoon is a legend from the golden era of Muay Thai, a period where fighters are built so unbelievably hardy, they make fighters today look soft. Lamnammoon is well known for his aggressive fight style and vicious knees. At 46 years of age this year, he can still inflict some serious damage with his knees – just take a look at his padwork in the video.

It has always been Lamnammoon’s dream to have his own gym and build kids from impoverished families into world champions, just like how Muay Thai has changed his own life. But he quickly realizes how complex the role of a gym owner is versus that of a fighter.

It is a life of ecstatic highs when his fighters win big fights, but also heartbreaking lows when tragedy struck the gym 2 years ago. The purpose of this interview is not to debate the exact details of how or why the tragedy happened, but to sympathize with the grief of a teacher’s loss.

Lamnammoon is a wonderful teacher and a beautiful human being, a father and role model to his family and all the young fighters under his care. You can train with him at his gym in Ubon Ratchathani, a 1-hour domestic flight from Bangkok.
