Review: Truly Representative American Orchestral Music on Vox
This two disc set offers an exceptional panorama of American orchestral music. You get Virgil Thomson's suite from The Louisiana Story, Ned Rorem's Third Symphony, William Schuman's Seventh, Howard Hanson's Sixth, Gunther Schuller's Symphony 1965, and Edward MacDowell's Indian Suite. The performances are all solid or better, and the early 70s sonics mostly very good. This is one of those collections that you might at first pass over, but it deserves some serious attention.
