MANILA, Philippines — Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa running inside the Senate halls to evade a possible arrest order from the International Criminal Court (ICC) is pathetic as the country’s former top cop seemed to have lost his swagger, Mamamayang Liberal party-list Rep. Leila de Lima said on Tuesday.

In an ambush interview at the Batasang Pambansa complex, de Lima said she cannot help but laugh when she saw the closed circuit television camera footage of dela Rosa sprinting on the Senate building’s staircase to evade authorities who were believed to be tasked to serve the ICC’s warrant of arrest.

“When I was shown the video where he is running away, and that he nearly fell down, I found it funny and honestly, I view the scenery or the scenario as pathetic. It appears pathetic because… where is your previous swagger?” wondered the House senior deputy minority leader.

According to de Lima, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV only fulfilled dela Rosa’s wishes, as the incumbent Senator previously dared Trillanes to personally serve ICC’s arrest order against him — and even be the one to put him in handcuffs.

“You even challenged former Senator Trillanes, dela Rosa’s ‘make my day’ statements and his dare for Trillanes to handcuff him, and that’s exactly what Senator Trillanes did. He was there to fulfill the wishes of Senator Bato,” de lima noted.

“So it’s funny and at the same time it’s a pity because he should know that already, and he still took the risk of going there,” the lawmaker said.

“Wasn’t rumors of a warrant of arrest being discussed, although the reports and news reports were conflicting? But I hope he knew that there was a warrant of arrest. That’s the reason why he hid for what, four months or more than four months?” she recalled.

De lima also reminded the public that dela Rosa showed up at the Senate not to work, but to participate in efforts to oust former Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III.

“He did not show up at the Senate to work, but this time around, because of that planned coup against the Senate leadership. So he showed up for that purpose, that’s political actually in nature — not to work,” she stressed.

“So he knows that – the risk,” she pointed out.

On Monday afternoon, after session resumed, observers and members of the media in the Senate were surprised to see dela Rosa in the plenary hall, returning to the chamber after around six months of absence.
