Good intentions, harmful effects: Philanthropy in the 21st century

Based on her experiences both as an activist and a non-profit leader, Izzy Waxman will discuss shortcomings of the non-profit industry (they're not what you think!) and how the field must change to address 21st century challenges - as well as how her work with Mazon Canada is leading this change in the Jewish sector.

Izzy Waxman is the Executive Director of MAZON Canada, the National Jewish Response to Hunger - a role that perfectly combines her love for Jewish community organizing, social justice and food. After her studies in anthropology and psychology at Sarah Lawrence College in New York, she worked as a fundraiser, fundraising coach, and Jewish youth educator - including as the Summer Director of Camp Gesher, an experiential education Jewish summer camp, and teaching Jewish history and tradition at the Morris Winchevsky School and the Habonim Shul's Jewish Heritage School. She's also been a regular host for Grassroots Shabbat, an open Jewish community experience. When she's not busy running campaigns and building relationships to feed vulnerable people, she loves to volunteer for political advocacy projects and learn to cook traditional foods from her heritages (Ashkenazi Jewish and German).
