Mark O'Connor memoir - Crossing Bridges: My Journey from Child Prodigy to Fiddler Who Dared the World
While in Seattle this week for my sold out concert at The Triple Door for my book release, I paid a visit to my old house, neighborhood and streets I used to skateboard on 50 years ago. Music writer Charles Cross told me that this area was getting to be a fancy suburb of Seattle now. Well, not where I lived and grew up. It’s exactly the same. Nothing has changed, a time warp. My memoir Crossing Bridges lives in real time here. You don’t have to imagine it from 50 years ago, I am standing in the streets of it, on the exact same asphalt.
My first archival recordings for the companion CD Early Childhood Recordings were captured here. The very first photos for the companion A Musical Childhood in Pictures were taken by my mother here. The place where my dysfunctional family lived, a dying mother from cancer all during my childhood, a raging alcoholic and abusive father, and where I ran to escape the older bullies in the neighborhood because they found out that I practiced my music in this house. I write about these times in Crossing Bridges: My Journey from Child Prodigy to Fiddler Who Dared the World.
