In today's video, we will decipher the only Tropical Storm to make landfall in California during the 20th Century, the 1939 California Tropical Storm. The storm was the 9th Hurricane to form in the Eastern Pacific Ocean during the 1939 Hurricane Season. It was known by Mexican fisherman as El Cordonazo or The Lash of St. Francis due to the storm coming around the Feast of St. Francis on October 4th.

The storm formed from a Tropical Depression on September 15th, 1939 off the Central American Coast and moved west-northwest until it was to the Southwest of Baja California Peninsula, then started turning to the north and then northeast towards Southern California. In the early morning hours on 9/25/1939, Hurricane Nine was downgraded to a Tropical Storm with winds of 65mph and made landfall near San Pedro, California.

The storm killed 93 people in total and caused $2million (1939 dollars) in damage or $36.7 million in 2020 dollars and brought about the formation of the Southern California Weather Bureau Office.
