The Chase That Almost Ended Their Lives

In 1945, two broke young men met backstage at a theatre in Harlem. Sidney Poitier was mopping floors to pay for acting lessons. Harry Belafonte was a stagehand. Neither had a dollar — but both had a dream. They made it together, becoming the first Black stars Hollywood couldn't ignore. In 1964, they flew to Mississippi with $70,000 in cash for civil rights workers. The KKK chased their car down the highway. They made it out. For eighty years, they laughed and fought and changed what was possible. When Poitier died in 2022, Belafonte said: "He was truly my brother." Some friendships don't just survive a lifetime — they reshape one.
