Essential Commodities Act Invoked | India's Battle Against LPG Hoarding and Price Spikes

India has invoked the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 amid fears of LPG shortages caused by global energy disruptions and geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Reports of commercial LPG shortages in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru have raised concerns about supply stability. To prevent hoarding, black marketing, and price spikes, the government has activated emergency powers under the Essential Commodities Act.

Under this law, authorities can regulate production, supply, distribution, and pricing of essential goods such as food grains, fuel, medicines, and fertilisers.

Key measures include redirecting propane and butane toward LPG production and prioritizing supply to state-owned oil companies.

With India importing 60–65% of its LPG needs, disruptions in shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz could significantly impact energy security.
