Grace Elizabeth - The Look of Love (extended Dusty Springfield song, Burt Bacharach / Hal David)

The iconic song that lost out to Doctor Dolittle 'Talk to the Animals' at the 1968 Oscars. Runtime has been extended to 8 minutes 14 seconds.

And also now graced with Grace Elizabeth. Burt Bacharach composed this as an instrumental, but as the story goes, Hal David was so inspired by seeing Ursula Andress while screening cuts for the off-Bond film Casino Royale. Ursula 'Undress', as she was jokingly called, has an air to her persona that is also found in today's generation in, more than any other I can think of, supermodel Grace Elizabeth.

The original runtime for the 1967 song was 4:11.
That same year, Dusty Springfield released a shorter version running 3:36 as a B-side. The first, 007 Casino Royale original soundtrack version was released on January 29, 1967. The re-recorded single version was done on April 14, 1967, and released on May 19, 1967.

There were MANY versions of this song that were done. But none that I've yet heard which ever came close to Dusty Springfield's original version.

Well, even 'original' needs to be qualified. Because while it was the first release, it was not the first recording. The first recording was an instrumental by Stan Getz. That was recorded in December of 1966, though not released until 1968. Curiously, while Stan Getz is famous for his Bossa Nova worldwide hit The Girl from Ipanema, sung by Astrud Gilberto, Dusty Springfield's version sounds more Bossa Nova than his. And Astrud also did a vocal version with Getz, whom she was involved with.

So to me, there is only one standout version of this iconic song. Now here is the curious part…
Dusty Springfield's two versions are noticeably different. With even a change in lyrics:

What this EXTENDED fan-made edit does here is pairs these two versions together. It is the full OST album version followed by the single version. Where the OST does a fadeout trumpet solo, this now serves as a bridge between the two. It no longer fades out, but rather now it transitions from trumpet solo to sax solo, connecting straight into the single cut.

For everyone who this song ended too early, and had difficulty deciding which version you preferred, you no longer have to choose. You now get both in this one song that runs 8:14.

While she presents a stunningly beautiful look, in her interviews she sounds quite down-to-earth, and comes across as intelligent. She seems like she would be an interesting person to get to know in person, though one might wonder whether it would even be possible to have a normal conversation with a person who looks this stunning. Perhaps you would eventually get used to it? That, or her radiance would fry you like the Sun.

One of her Vogue videos, not used here, is titled:
La douleur de l'amour est la douleur d'être vivant.

According to GoogleTranslate, that saying means:
'The pain of love is the pain of being alive'.

My first reaction to that was being taken aback, wanting to reject it as being the opposite of what we idealize love as being. But then, I came around to seeing it as profound. Because there is the ideal of love, and the reality of love. And so often, it IS "the pain of love". Obviously, when a connection fails to get made. But also in the desired for, where the connection does happen, but years after it turns into something quite different.

THE PAIN OF LOVE.

When I listen to Dusty Springfield, pain is the furthest thing from my mind. Her voice and the instruments get me to drift off into that blissful fantasy of the ultimate connection that we all yearn for. To love, and to be loved.

And this essence can be captured in a single look.

And I am quite happy for Grace Elizabeth, as she seems to have found it. The sweetest video I have seen of hers is when she talks about re-enacting her marriage to her husband Nicolas Krause:

That was uploaded just 2 weeks ago today. With her hair short and dark black, it is a very different look than the one that propelled her to the heights of fashion model fame. But perhaps I think it is the best look on her. She became a mom last year, according to Wikipedia. And I think it is a GREAT look.
