Kosciuszko started his military studies in Poland, but due to a civil war, he fled to Paris. There, he had to study arts, but military was still his primary passion. After a short return to Poland, where he fell in love with a governor’s daughter, Kosciuszko heard in France about the Revolutionary War and decided to fight for the American side.
Kosciuszko used his military knowledge as an engineer to delay the advancing British and prepare the defenses for the battle of Saratoga. Thanks to his ingenuity, the Americans won this key battle of the war.
Once he returned home, Kosciuszko was a member of the army. Then, the Russians invaded Poland because of a new constitution and Kosciuszko was part of the war. After a ceasefire, Polish lands were split in half by Russia and Prussia, and Kosciuszko decided to lead an uprising.
The uprising was destined to fail and Kosciuszko went to the U.S. where he heard of Polish soldiers fighting in the Napoleon army.
Having found out Napoleon wasn’t interested in restoring Poland, Kosciuszko went to Switzerland where he died at the age of 71.
