Michigan’s 10¢ Deposit & 6% State Tax — Since 1994?! #PureMichigan #Shorts
Michigan's 6% sales and use tax applies to the retail sale of most tangible personal property (goods that can be touched or moved), as well as a limited number of specific services. The rate is uniform across the state, meaning there are no additional local sales taxes.
What the 6% Tax Applies To:
Tangible Personal Property: Clothing, electronics, furniture, books, jewelry, cars, trucks, motorcycles, and office supplies.
Prepared Food: Meals and beverages at restaurants, cafes, and concession stands.
Vehicles: Cars, trucks, motorcycles, and boats.
Telecommunications: Phone and internet services.
Accommodations: Hotels, motels, and short-term rentals.
Utilities: Natural gas and electricity (4% rate for residential use).
Digital Goods: Downloaded, streamed, or accessed digital products.
Out-of-State Purchases: Catalog, telephone, and internet purchases from retailers (use tax).
Common Exemptions:
Groceries: Food intended for home consumption.
Prescription Drugs: Medication prescribed by a licensed pharmacist.
Industrial Processing: Items used directly in manufacturing.
Professional Services: Most, such as accounting, legal, and medical, are not currently taxed.
Shipping: Separately stated shipping charges are not taxable as of April 2023.
Gasoline: As of Jan 1, 2026, gasoline is subject to a 21-cent-per-gallon fuel tax instead of the 6% sales tax.
Proposed Changes: Legislation in 2026 has considered extending the 6% tax to currently exempt services like AI, landscaping, and private jets.
