On the Air with FACC: Tributes and Support for those Impacted by Cancer

Before coming to America, Darwin Gomez, 35, was a scientist and chemistry professor at Eastern Visayas State University, Tacloban City, Philippines. He is a chemistry graduate from the University of the Philippines and is now a PhD student at Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, U.S.A. He is originally from Santa Fe, Leyte, Philippines. In April 2025, he won the Best Poster Award at the Virginia Tech Center for Drug Discovery’s Poster Session. A gathering of researchers and scientists advancing medical innovation.

But not long after, life changed. In May 2025, Darwin was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer. He went through chemotherapy and radiation, but after signs of progression, he is now facing another round of treatment.

He lives alone in Blacksburg, Virginia, with no family to take care of him. He also misses simple Filipino meals and the comfort of home.
Filipino American Cancer Care is now his support system during this difficult time.

#OnTheAir with FACC is a production of the Filipino American Cancer Care.
