Identifying and Developing your Research Skills

Brett Kristoff from Career Services led a workshop on research skills development for the SHURE (Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) program, focusing on transferable skills needed for undergraduate research. The session covered six key domains: research foundations and inquiry skills, information and data literacy, communication and knowledge mobilization, collaboration and professionalism, ethics and integrity, and methods and methodologies. Participants completed a self-assessment to identify their current competencies in these areas and discussed goal-setting using SMART criteria. Brett emphasized the importance of reflection, metacognition, and networking in research careers, noting that many research opportunities are found through word-of-mouth connections. The workshop also highlighted upcoming summer workshops and opportunities for skill development through the SURE Canvas course, including modules on collaboration, communication, digital literacy, and constructive dialogue.
