Spigen Ultra Hybrid S MagFit iPhone 17 Review - Strong Protection, Terrible Design Choices

At first glance, the Spigen Ultra Hybrid S MagFit looks like the perfect clear iPhone case. Thicker back, rotating kickstand, metallic buttons… premium everything. But then you run the tests, look at the build, and find two red flags that just ruin the whole package.

Spigen for iPhone 17 Pro Max Case, Ultra Hybrid S MagFit [TPU Covered Camera Control] [Kickstand] [Compatible with MagSafe] Review

-looks like your typical clear case
-back is thicker than most
-but the camera lump is still...squishy
-this case has a built in kickstand
-and unlike previous versions
-it rotates
-seems like a great idea until...
-it makes no difference in the functionality of the kickstand
-grip on the case is your typical TPU edge case
-slightly tacky
-super back
-the kickstand adds to the bulk of the case
-coming in at 63g (Avg is now 50g)
-and will make your ipHone feel 66% bigger
-that's the middle of the road type bulk
-for corner drops, the intial impact was around 9.3G's
-11% better than average
-the amount of rotation after a camera drop was around 24% less
-so the thicker corners damped that part of the drop
-settling rate was 10% worse
-my guess is from the thicker back storing a bit more energy during the drop
-total force overall is 13% lower than average which is pretty good

-from a corner drop perspective, yea, awesome
-for face first drops
-it failed
-screen protector made contact with the table

-for the camera lump, the Ultra Hybrid S has a large TPU bumper
-and it doesn't do much for the initial drop
-BUT the settling rate was way higher because of the big bumper
-the vibrations calmed down quick with the lip
-BUT didn't help the total force because of the big initial drop
-now unlike other clear cases,
-this case has some heft, back is 3.3mm thick, corners are 2.1mm
-there are air cushions and spigen forgot to label them?
-this case mitigates the rainbowing on the clear cases by having a gap between the back of the case and iPhone
-for rigidity, even though the back is thicker, the top is TPU so it only took 31N to bend 8mm
-8% better
-for magsafe, it takes 10.1N to pull, 11.2 N to push
-11% above average
-pretty good right
-EXCEPT because of the stand
-there's not bottom magnets so accessories are going to rotate easier
-not an issue for certain grips but wallets might be an issue
-now unlike the Ultra Hybrid, this Ultra Hybrid S comes with metallic integrated buttons
-it's a good look on the case
-personally, they're too rounded but that's just me
-even small things like the red mark accent on the action button
-ok, enough gushing over these buttons
-because what spigen did with the camera control button is a travesty
-there's no button, just a piece of plastic
-even the dumpy normal Ultra Hybrid has a camera control button
-Apple designed this button to slide BUT with the plastic cover my finger gets caught on the TPU
-WHHY
